DANCER

Well, happy Friday, everyone! I have a new watercolor + story waiting for yooou. This one is a bit different from what I usually do. I grew up in a classical family (as far as music), and my sister now teaches music. So, I had a lot of fun picking out a classical piece to go with this art. Hope you enjoy!!

Listen to this song for the full effect.

She peeked through the slant in the thick velvet curtain, one eye closed, her nose scrunched up. The murmur of the crowd has hushed into a respectful silence. She knew the process and sounds all too well…ever since she had first faced the crowd including her proud mother and father and her encouraging sister two years her senior as an aspiring ballerina. She had danced her heart out at every performance beginning from her first debut as a human-like rose petal flower.

She looked down at her frilly tulle garment, noticing that it was much like the color of her very first costume as a four-year-old, except much more classic and grown-up this time. Stretching the sides of the fluffy skirt down with her anticipating fingers, she heard the familiar movement of the bows against the violins’ strings. This was the exact melody of her very first stage performance as a small, excited child.

Delicately pointing the toes of her right foot, she arched her entire body to her right, stretching out her arms in a slant toward the high, wooden rafters overhead. The music slowed, and she knew that was her cue. The heavy curtains drew apart, and she gracefully faced the anticipating crowd; they in the cloud of darkness, and she in the warm, bright spotlight.

One of my favorite pieces..it is the kind of piece that never ceases to give me that distinct lump in my throat; that same one that started when I was just 16 and dreaming of a life with a woman as talented and as beautiful as you!

Jo: Thank you so much!! I definitely will. I can have them up in my Etsy shop very soon. If you're still interested, I can direct you there. I'll message you also to see if there's a specific size you had in mind. And you're welcome! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend so far. :)

Oh my gosh. This is my favourite of your stories so far. I feel like you wrote it specifically for me :) I know, that sounds a bit self centred, eh? But my first true passion was dance. I studied jazz ballet, then classical ant then modern dance too. My younger years were filled with dreams of being a dancer...sadly, never realized, but that is life sometimes.

There's something about dancing that affects my soul - the movement of the human body, the expression, the feeling that something from the inside radiates out - without words, the connection with the music and the performance aspect, of course. I remember being so nervous waiting for my cue, but then once on stage all the nervousness faded away. Every time. I knew I could always rely on that, so the pre performance nerves never bothered me that much.

I love to go to dance shows, but somehow, it also makes me sad as I get filled with envy and disappointment of lost dreams. It's a happy/sad relationship I have with dance - but nonetheless a powerful and meaningful one.

Thanks for this post :)

Holly: Reading about your childhood with dance gave me goosebumps. I actually wrote this story in mind with a sweet girl my sister and I used to babysit since she was 2 (I was 8 and my sis was 9). Of course my parents were there too, since we were tiny ourselves. But anyway, she started out dancing at a very young age, and now she's in college majoring in dance. I only "danced" ballet as a four year old, and I was bored. I WISH I could go back and tell my younger self, "Hey!! Enjoy this...you'll wish you'd have gone through with it!" It must be so hard for you to watch performances. I think I would get emotional every time. Well, if it makes you feel any better, I think you're phenomenal at what you do, sweet Holly! You always bring happiness and inspiration to me.
